Protein Analysis: Characterization

The GBS characterization service involves determining the physiochemical parameters of the protein of interest through various biochemical analyses. Fully and partially purified proteins can be characterized, but for partially purified materials, the customer is required to provide a means of identifying the protein(s) of interest.

Characterization results are returned in a report format, which includes estimates of molecular weight, isoelectric point, and relative hydrophobicity. (See the 2DE page for a system description.) Relative hydrophobicity is determined using an analytical Hydrophobic Interaction Column, calibrated with standard marker proteins.

For customers interested in a more detailed characterization, supplemental information on post-translational modification (glycosylation, phosphorylation, presence of cysteine residues, presence of disulfide bonds) and protein identification by tryptic digestion and mass spectrometry are available for additional charges.
